Great sadness as Seanie leaves the building

There was great sadness in the LaoisToday office and beyond this week, when news broke that Sean Hennessy will be leaving the team as he heads out foreign to God Knows Where as part of his studies.

A key member of the team for almost a year, he leaves a big pair of shoes to fill. It’s understood that his position will be now advertised – with a preference for a candidate experienced in farming, property, the weather, remembering old football games and knowing who is related to who.

An ability to, eh, research, alternative, eh, parties in secret Laois locations will also be desirable.

Seanie – as he was commonly referred to – quickly established himself in the office, commandeering a swivel chair and a prominent desk almost immediately. He also had his own place to stand, looking out the window as he waited for his lift or checking out the progress of the new wall that was being built across the road.

His starting time varied from 9am to 12noon and he generally knocked off any time between 1pm and 8pm, or whenever someone remembered to come and collect him to bring him home.

His colleagues all paid tribute to him as he finished up.

“I’ll miss guessing the Annanough starting team with him,” said Steven. “And of course speculating on how much certain parcels of land will make. I hope wherever he’s going will have something as good as the Hennessy Auctioneers monthly auction for him to look forward to.”

“I’ll miss his goal-keeping expertise,” said Siun. “Even if he knows nothing about hurling.”

“He was a valued member of the judging panel for Laois’s Hottest Men,” said Julie. “And he argued strongly for those he felt should make the list – and those that shouldn’t.”

“There wasn’t one man on the list that he didn’t have an opinion on,” said Sarah.

“It’s an awful shame to lose a fellow Knockbeg past man,” added Alan. “We’re a different, better, breed to everyone else and I just hope that he’ll find someone who he can talk to about Chris Conway, John Rouse and John Behan.”

Sean departs with all our best wishes – and we look forward to including him in Team of the Week now that he’s eligible for selection again.
