Laois hurlers name a new captain ahead of league opener

Laois hurling captain Ross King

Rathdowney-Errill’s Ross King has been named the new Laois senior hurling captain ahead of Sunday’s Allianz League Division 1B clash against Kerry.

King, who made his debut in 2014, has been a top performer at club level in recent years and new Laois manager Eamonn Kelly says that former Tipp boss Nicky English rates King extremely highly.

English was manager of the UCD team that King starred on in the Fitzgibbon Cup and was seriously impressed by the attacker’s talents.

“Ross has a fantastic attitude and he’s a very popular member of the squad. He’s hurling very well with us and Nicky English would have spoken very highly of him,” Kelly told Jackie Cahill in a recent interview.

“He maintained that Ross was one of the best he had with UCD and that he’d make any inter-county team in Ireland.”

King, who is still only 23, was also a top underage soccer player and was on a soccer scholarship in UCD.
