The Armed Response Unit were called to a public disorder incident in Mountmellick on Monday afternoon when the Gardai were subjected to opposition from a large crowd.

The Gardai were carrying out a search under the Theft and Fraud Offences Act in Silverbrook in Mountmellick when they were met with opposition.

Items were thrown at the Gardai and the Armed Response Unit was called as well as the Detective Unit from Portlaoise and uniformed Gardai from Portlaoise, Mountmellick and Portarlington Garda Stations.

Two males were arrested at the scene – one juvenile and one man in his 20s. Both were released and a file was sent to the National Juvenile Office and to the DPP.

A substantial amount of property – valued in the region of €10-€15,000 – was recovered at the scene. The Gardai are now cataloguing those items and trying to source the owners.

The investigation is ongoing.
