In Laois when you mention the name ‘Beano’, nobody needs to be told that you aren’t talking about a comic book character.
Beano in Laois is Brian ‘Beano’ McDonald from Arles-Killeen, one of the best footballers the county ever produced.
Well, someone has made a tribute video that is doing the rounds on social media. And, just like the man himself on the field of play, it’s absolutely class.
Set to the fitting background music of ‘Young Again’ by Hardwell, it begins with his goal in the 1996 All Ireland minor final – a diving fisted effort into the Canal End in Croke Park. Indeed that end of the famous stadium was to see some of the finest moments of his career, including two quick-fire goals in the 1997 All Ireland minor semi-final against Mayo and the 2003 Leinster senior final against Kildare, although that particular finish isn’t included.
It also features some magic from various grounds around the province – Tullamore, Navan and Carlow – as it goes from 1996 to 2006, the last year of the Mick O’Dwyer era.
One of our favourite clips is the sequence of dummy solos he pulled off against Carlow in Dr Cullen Park in 2004 before kicking a typically stylish point. That was the first day of Laois’s defence of the Leinster title won the previous year but the jam-packed terraces tell a story in itself – when a Laois football championship match was one of the highlights of the summer.
Beano would play for Laois up until 2009, is still lining out for Arles-Killeen and last year he was a selector with the county minor team.
Kudos to the person who put the video together – and please get in touch as we’d love to credit your great work:
