Laois 5-7 Tyrone 3-11

Ladies National Football League Division 2

Laois ladies struck five goals in Omagh against Tyrone to put one foot in the semi-finals of Division 2 with one game to play.

Kevin Doogue’s side remain top of the table on points difference from Westmeath and Cavan but crucially they have put daylight between themselves and the teams in fourth and fifth positions.

It was Ciara Burke who was Laois’s star player on the day. The Sarsfields native, who was introduced midway through the first half, helped herself to two goals and set up to more during a fine win for the ladies.

They didn’t have it all their own way however and once again, they were guilty of making a slow start which allowed their hosts to move into a 1-3 to 0-1 lead after 18 minutes.

But although Laois conceded a second goal soon after, they rallied to narrow the gap to four points at the half time break.

Caoimhe Simms raised a green flag for Laois while Mo Nerney and Ciara Burke chipped in with points to leave the half time score at 2-4 to 1-3 in Tyrone’s favour.

The sides were inseparable for much of the second period. Tyrone increased their lead on the resumption of play but Laois came roaring back and with points from Noirin Kirwan and a goal each via Ciara Burke and Laura Nerney to level the game at 3-5 to 2-8 with 15 minutes to go.

Tyrone scored a third goal but Nerney replied again for Laois and the game was deadlocked at 3-9 to 4-6 as we headed into injury time.

Tyrone kicked two points to go ahead but Laois replied via Amy Potts before Ciara Burke came up with a fifth goal to secure the win.

Laois travel to Cavan next week for their final league game in the knowledge that just a point will cement their place in the semi finals.
