A goal from a late Kevin Fitzpatrick penalty proved to be the winning score as Portlaoise got the better of Annanough in ACFL Division 1B on a scoreline of 2-9 to 2-8.
Played in Rathleague, Portlaoise led 0-6 to 1-2 at the break, the Annanough goal came from the rebound of an Elliott Scully penalty. But the visitors were dealt an early blow when Donal Miller was issued a black card by referee Seamus Mulhare.
Portlaoise pushed four clear with their first goal but Annanough fought back with Rory Stapleton and John Scully to the fore and a well-taken finish from James Miller helped put them into the lead.
But Portlaoise – who had good performances from Michael Nolan, Fintan Walsh, James Nerney and Craig Rogers – stayed going to the finish and were rewarded when Fitzpatrick tucked away a penalty near the end.
Elsewhere, in Division 2, Courtwood picked up their second win thanks to a 2-16 to 2-9 triumph away to Kilcavan. Late goals from Paddy Wilson and Laois senior and U-21 player Danny Luttrell helped them come from five points down to end up winning by seven.
