Smell at well-known Portlaoise street is ‘unacceptable’ – Cllr Lodge

Smell: Bull Lane in Portlaoise

Business owners in Bull Lane in Portlaoise have to endure an ongoing smell from the drains there.

Cllr Jerry Lodge had a notice of motion before the Portlaoise Municipal District Meeting calling on Laois County Council and Irish Water to give an update on the unacceptable position regarding the sewerage system in Bull Lane, which was highlighted two years ago.

A response from Ann Carroll from water services said due to delays with the procurement of survey contractors framework, as originally proposed, Irish Water has agreed to fast-track the survey works at Bull Lane and the subsequent construction works required.

“There is a smell emanating from some of the grates in Bull Lane,” Cllr Lodge said. He said this was creating annoyance to people there.

He believed there had been an agreement to separate the surface water and foul water drains there.

He said there are also difficulties with the cobble paving there. He said the traders there had contributed 10% towards the cost of paving there.

“We need to write to Irish Water stressing the urgency of this,” Cllr Aird said.
