Man arrested after armed raid in Mountrath post office

Garda

A man was arrested on Monday afternoon and a firearm recovered as part of a garda investigation into a post office robbery in Mountrath last week.

The arrest followed an operation involving detectives and gardai from Portlaoise and Portarlington.

Gardaí launched an appeal last week for information after the armed robbery at the post office in Mountrath on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 2.25pm when a loan male entered the premises carrying a firearm.

He made his escape after threatening staff and stealing a quantity of cash.

The man made his getaway in a blue Passat, with a possible registration of 02 D. The hubcaps on the driver’s side of the vehicle were also missing.

A Garda spokesperson told LaoisToday: “He was driving erratically as he fled the scene.

“So we ask anyone who may have saw anything to contact Portlaoise Gardaí at 056 86 74100.”
