Deaths in Laois

The 22-year-old man who was killed in a car accident in Portarlington early this morning has been named as Daniel Delaney from Cloncarlin, Monasterevin.

The fatal accident happened at approximately 3.50am this morning, Monday, August 7, at Kilmullen on the R420 road between Portarlington and Monasterevin.

Mr Delaney, who was a member of the Irish Army, was the sole occupant when the car he was driving collided with a telephone pole and then an entrance pillar of a nearby house. He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise.

The road has re-opened following an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

Gardai wish to appeal for witnesses to contact Portlaoise Garda Station on 057 8674100, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

The stretch of road in question was recently the subject of a discussion at a Portarlington-Graiguecullen Municipal District meeting with local councillors Aidan Mullins and Tom Mulhall both calling for the speed limit to be reduced.
