Laois student recieves prestigious €20,000 scholarship

A Scoil Chríost Rí student who received over 600 points in her Leaving Cert and has been awarded one of 36 Naughton Foundation scholarships in the country.

Ciara Burke recieved the €20,000 scholarship on Saturday 23 September which was presented by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar in Trinity College Dublin.

Ciara says she was delighted to get the award. She told LaoisToday, “It was such a shock. I applied and didn’t really know if I’d get it but I was so happy when I found out.”

The Naughton Scholarships promote the study of STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) and are awarded to students who want to pursue these subjects at third level education in Ireland.

Tremendous student

Ciara studied Biology, Chemistry and Physics for the Leaving Cert and is now doing Engineering in UCD.

Ciara seems to have gained her talent for maths from her father, who is an engineer based in Athlone.

Scoil Chríost Rí took to Twitter to congratulate their former student.

This isn’t the first time the school has had a succesful applicant for the scholarship.

Joanne Parker was received the honour in 2013 and Rachel Costello was awarded the scholarhip for her studies in Computer Science and Language at Trinity College Dublin in 2014.
