Bright Sparks coffee morning for Dyslexia in Portlaoise

Literacy tutor Mary Connell

The Bright Sparks Learning Centre will be hosting a Coffee morning this Friday, October 6 at 10.30 am in the Parish Centre, Portlaoise.

All proceeds will go to the Dyslexia Association of Ireland to aid them in providing information and support services for people with Dyslexia.

The Bright Sparks Team will be on hand to answer any questions you have about Dyslexia.

The organisers say they are looking forward to meeting everyone for a chat and a cuppa!

Five in every thirty children starting out in school have the potential to fail at reading.

This is generally known as Dyslexia and can be mild, moderate or extreme.

“Those children need to be identified at the end of junior infants and given specific and intensive training in the sounds of the alphabet,” according to Mary Connell, the organiser of Friday’s event.

“They then need to learn how to blend the sounds of the letters to make words,” she said.

Ms Connell is literacy teacher at Sensational Kids and Bright Sparks Learning Centre in Portlaoise.

She is also author of the Read Without Fear Sound Reading workbooks which are available from Sensational Kids Child Development and Learning Store on www.sensationalkids.ie
