WATCH: Mountmellick farmer shows extent of flooding as animals stranded

Dairy farmer Bernard Rochford has shared footage of flooding on his farm in Mountmellick.

“The floods were getting bad since Tuesday, the rain just didn’t really stop the last couple of days.”

But floods in the area  got very bad very quickly since 4pm on Wednesday afternoon.

“Over 60 yearlings are stuck in a field, and there’s no way of getting to them.”

Lucky

“We’re very lucky in one way, it could have been much worse, all of our other cows are in.”

“But I’ve never seen floods this high before,” he said.

Mountmellick has been a no go area for the past 24 hours, over thirty homes were evacuated last night after the River Owenass burst its banks following torrential rain in the Slieve Blooms.

Sandbags remain in place around the town as the Mountmellick comes to terms with flooding on a scale which has not been seen in decades.

Staff from the county council and the Department of Social Protection were on hand from 9am to help those affected.
