Defeat for Scoil Chriost Ri in All Ireland basketball Semi Final

Congratulations to Claire Melia on her selection
Defeat for Scoil Chriost Ri

Scoil Chriost Ri senior A basketball team bowed out of the All-Ireland Championship when they were beaten by Colaiste Chiarain Leixlip in the semi final last Monday in the National Arena.

Earlier that morning they had a brilliant win in the quarter final against St Vincents Cork, 56 to 45.

With the game in the balance, Maeve Phelan produced an explosive finish, scoring 19 of her team’s last 23 points.

Her scores included three-pointers, fast break, medium jump shots and some brilliant post moves demonstrating her full array of skills.

Alas it was to be Maeve’s last day playing for the school as Chriost Ri came up against a superb Leixlip team sporting four Irish internationals in the semi final.

The Laois girls were six points down after the first quarter but Leixlip cut loose in the second to stretch into a 36 to 18 lead.

Scoil Chriost Ri fought all the way but were unable to bridge the gap.

Leixlip, who were recently crowned Senior A Cup Champions are the only team to beat the Portlaoise school this year, having knocked them out in the first round of the Cup earlier in the season.

This is a very young Senior A squad with Maeve the only player not available next year.

The U-16 A team are going for the Cup and Championship double later this month while the U-15 A team play Colaiste Einde Galway in the All Ireland Cup Semi Final on February 22.

The future is certainly very bright for the school and the girls will work extremely hard to land that elusive Senior A All Ireland.

Meanwhile, the school wish Maeve all the best and they look forward to seeing her shoot the hoops for many years to come.

TEAM: Maeve Phelan [C], Erone Fitzpatrick, Amy Byrne, Sophie Delahunt, Ailphe Griffin, Shauna Dooley, Ciara Byrne, Sarah Fleming, Jasmine Burke, Leah Loughman.
