All Ireland Colleges SHC ‘C’ Semi-final

St Fergal’s Rathdowney produced a stunning second-half display against Kinvara of Galway to book their place in the All Ireland Colleges SHC ‘C’ final in two weeks time.

Played in Kilmallock in Limerick, Rathdowney recovered from a slow start to take over in the second half. Their reward is a final clash with Clare school Scariff on March 24.

Niall Coen got an early goal for the Galway side but after ten minutes the teams were level, 1-1 to 0-4.

But Kinvara opened up a bit of a gap and were 1-9 to 0-5 clear after 25 minutes. But St Fergal’s added on two points and then a goal from Mark Hennessy on the stroke of half time, left it 1-9 to 1-7 at the break.

And the Rathdowney outfit were transformed in the second half. With Thep Fitzpatrick outstanding at centre-back with a couple of lon-range points, the sides were level at 1-10 each after 45 minutes.

Goals from Chris Rafter and Mark Hennessy in the 54th and 57th minute stretched St Fergal’s well clear and although Kinvara hit two late goals, it wasn’t enough to make up the difference.

“It’s a massive achievement,” said St Fergal’s manager Joe Dollard afterwards.

“They’re such a good crop of lads. They didn’t get going at all in the first half but when they came out in the second half they really went it.

“Thep got a couple of of great points, Mark Hennessy got a screamer of a goal and Cathail Dunne was probably our man of the match in goals.

“We’ve two weeks now to the final so we’ve to go back, put our heads down and get ready for that.”
