Stradbally bow out of Paddy Cotter Cup as Monksland prove too strong

An exciting new venture for the Midlands Schoolboys League

The main local interest this weekend in the CCFL soccer action was Stradbally Town at home to Monksland Utd in the Paddy Cotter Cup.

Stradbally have made a bit of a habit of seeing off teams from higher divisions this season in cup games but despite a decent performance they went down 3-0 to the Westmeath side in the quarter-final of the competition.

A couple of mistakes allowed Monksland lead 2-0 at half-time and a late penalty made it 3-0.

In an entertaining game, Stradbally did well for long patches despite the gap of a couple of league divisions and had good performances from Kevin Holohan and Billy and Damien Murphy.

In the only league action of note, Portlaoise Shamrocks and Mountmellick both won in Division 1 of the CCFL.
