Laois minor football boss Donncha Phelan has named his captain and vice-captain ahead of their Leinster championship opener against Longford.
The Rock’s Seán O’Neill will skipper the team this year and he will be assisted by Portarlington’s Cathal Bennett.
Manager Phelan revealed the news at a press conference this morning.
He said: “We named our captain this morning. Seán O’Neill from The Rock.
“He is very committed, as they all as. But he is very consistent and he shines by his actions. You would put every faith in Seán and he has consistently delivered upon that in his attitude towards training and matches.
“Anything that he is asked, he does it, so he is a great example to everyone else.
“Our vice-captain is another very good fella and that is Cathal Bennett from Portarlington.
“He himself sets a great standard of defending and his attitude towards training.
“So they are two great lads to lead the charge. We are happy with them and the panel I think is very happy too.
“The response was very good when we announced it to them this morning so I think they would be everyone’s pick.
“They were unanimous among ourselves as management. So fair play to the boys.”
Laois face Longford in Group 2 of the first round of the Leinster championship in O’Moore Park at 2pm on Monday May 7.
They then travel to Wexford on May 23 before hosting Carlow on May 30 in Round 3.
Laois then have a break due to the Junior Cert until their final group game away to Kildare on June 27.
The top two teams from the group will progress to the Leinster semi finals which take place on July 7.
