In Pictures: Darkness into Light draws the crowds in Rathdowney

Hundreds gathered in the main square in Rathdowney this morning for the annual Darkness into Light event.

The annual 5km walk/run fundraising event – held in venues all over the world – was once again a huge success raising huge money and awareness for Pieta House.

Despite the early hours, people were in high spirits and eager to take part and enjoy the event.

16 balloons were released seconds before the event began to pay tribute to those lost by suicide through the years.

Even bigger than last year

Almost 3,000 walkers raised €41,000 in Rathdowney and Mountmellick last year as part of Darkness into Light, and it is expected this year is raise more again.

Pieta House’s flagship fundraising awareness event takes place in over 180 venues in Ireland and around the world.

Funds raised from Darkness Into Light help keep Pieta House’s counselling services free to those in suicidal crisis, people who engage in self-harm, and those bereaved by suicide.

Secretary Barbara Geoghegan and team worked hard through the night to make sure the event was a success. LaoisToday was there to capture the morning.
