There was glory for a young Laois man at the popular Cork City Sports athletics meeting last night.
St Abban’s runner Cian Kelly took the gold medal in the 1,500 metre event – smashing his personal best in the process.
In a highly stacked field, 15 young men toed the line all knowing that only seconds separated their personal bests.
From the gun, Brian Power took the lead setting a grueling pace for the field.
Cian Kelly followed behind in second position leading the chasing pack as the gap grew more and more.
A full 7 seconds separated the two as they hit the bell, the gap forever growing smaller until eventually Kelly pulled it all back up the home straight and cruised across the line as victor smashing his personal best by 4 seconds in the process.
The former Knockbeg student’s time of 3:55 is just amazing for an 18 year old.
Fair play Cian!
