Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee Sean Fleming, has received information from the HSE regarding Abbeyleix Hospital.

The Laois TD said he raised the issue of future services at Abbeyleix at a recent meeting between the HSE and the PAC and received a written response from the HSE.

In this response, the HSE said they are working with local interest groups to bring forward a phased redevelopment proposal of the centre.

“While the details have not been finalised, it is intended to provide a rehabilitation/reablement model of care for short stay residents in conjunction with the primary care centre in Abbeyleix. The development of diagnostics and an extension of therapy services will be critical for this new service,” added Mr Fleming.

The Fianna Fáil TD said that a project group has been established to look at development on the site in Abbeyleix and meetings have already taken place.

So far so good

“So far this is good news, but it all depends on these plans being finalised and funding being made available for capital and ongoing expenditure by the HSE.

“I am now calling on the Minister for Health and the HSE, as a matter of urgency, to finalise these plans and make arrangements to ensure funding is provided in the HSE Service Plan 2019 to allow this redevelopment proposal become a reality. The public are entitled to and need a viable long term plan for Abbeyleix Hospital,” added Mr Fleming.
