Your guide to what’s on in Laois this weekend

After a hectic few weeks of festivals, things are a little quieter in Laois this weekend but there are a still lot of things to do throughout the county.

Heritage week begins next weekend and there are lots of preparations under way with over 70 events planned.

This could be a great weekend to complete your Laois Passport and explore the wonderful heritage sites of Laois.  You can download your passport here if you haven’t one already or collect one from Dunmaise Arts Centre, Emo Court, your local library and Heritage House in Abbeyleix.  I

t’s the perfect excuse to visit our favourite spots in Laois.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 9

Writing Workshop

Mountmellick Library is hosting a wonderful writing workshop with Laois author Andrea Carter. The workshop is suitable for children from 12-15 years and is suitable for all budding writers.

The event is free but booking with the library is essential.  It begins at 2pm and booking can be made by calling 057 86 44572.

Dogs Trust Talk

Paul from Dogs Trust and his dog Magic will host a workshop on Thursday morning at 11am in Mountmellick Library.

Titled “A Dog’s Life” this fun workshop is aimed at 7-12 year olds and a great morning is guaranteed. The event is free but booking with the library is essential by calling 057 86 44572.

Slieve Bloom Walking Club Guided Walk

The Slieve Bloom Walking Club’s next guided walk is the Bishops Tree Walk in Durrow.

This walk is a 10km Grade B walk and takes 4 hours. Meeting point is Castle Arms Hotel Durrow at 7pm. €5 per walk or €20 annual membership. For more information see here

Laois GAA Fixtures

There are a number of games down for decision in the Laois football championship – Ballyfin Gaels take on Crettyard Gaels in the SFC in O’Moore Park, Courtwood and Timahoe meet in the IFC while in the JFC, Annanough host Graiguecullen, Portlaoise entertain Ballyroan-Abbey and Stradbally meet Killeshin. FRIDAY, AUGUST 10

Table Quiz in aid of Friends of Portlaoise Hospital

Friends of Portlaoise Hospital are organising a charity table quiz to raise funds to improve patient care at the Midlands Hospital, Portlaoise.

This is a great cause as the group relies solely on fundraising and donations. So come along and test your general knowledge & there’s lots of great prizes to be won.

The quiz will be held in Kavanaghs Bar & Venue at 8pm and a table of 4 costs €40.

Laois GAA Fixtures

There is a very busy schedule of fixtures in Laois across adult and juvenile with the big game being the meeting of Portlaoise and Graiguecullen in the SFC in O’Moore Park. You can see the full fixtures here. 

SATURDAY, AUGUST 11

Abbeyleix GAA Golf Classic

Saturday sees the annual Abbeyleix GAA Golf Classic take place in Abbeyleix Golf Club.

This is great way to get in a round of golf and support your local club.  A team of 4 is €100 and tee times are available in the club or contact Niall 086 7219728 or Richie 087 9254754.

Laois GAA Fixtures

There is another busy schedule of Laois GAA fixtures with the Laois ladies in an All Ireland intermediate quarter-final against Roscommon as well as a number of club games in Laois. You can see the full fixtures here. 

SUNDAY, AUGUST 12

Family Fun Day

Portarlington Lions Club is hosting a free family fun day in the People’s Park this Sunday from 2pm to 5pm.

There will be lots of attractions for every age group including a free swimming session in Portarlington Leisure Centre.  Enjoy the live music, bouncy castles, dancing exhibitions and tug of war and lots more.
