The Portlaoise Panthers mens team made a winning start to their Division 1 campaign at the weekend.
They travelled down to Munster to face University of Limerick Eagles and emerged with a six point win.
The young Panthers side added Mike Pierre to the squad during the summer and he showed well in his first competitive appearance.
He top scored with 36 points and Portlaoise’s next highest scorer was a young Mountmellick man who has just returned home from High School in Alabama.
James Gormley had moved to America in 2017 but he is now home and will add an extra dimension to the men’s team this year.
Portlaoise led by a solitary point at half time but built on that in the third quarter to go 63-49 ahead.
UL came back in the final quarter but the Panthers had done enough and they won by 81 to 75 in the end.
Portlaoise Panthers are at home next weekend as they face LIT in St Mary’s Hall on Saturday at 8pm.
