Portlaoise 3-05 St Conleths 1-06
U12 ‘A’ championship final
The girls of Portlaoise finished off the year in style with a fantastic victory against St Conleths in the “A” championship final.
On Thursday evening in Annanough both teams served up a very entertaining final. The score does not reflect what was a battling performance from a well drilled and physical St Conleths team.
Portlaoise got on the front foot from the very start, with midfield pairing Niamh Murphy and Ella Hanamy cutting through the St Conleth’s defence.
Roisín Murphy at corner forward was a constant thorn in St Conleth’s side and it was her goal that got Portlaoise on the scoreboard. St Conleth’s fought back hard adding three points and a goal to the scoreboard.
Portlaoise added two more points, one from Shona Finlay at half forward and Ella Hanamy adding another leaving this game anybody’s heading into half time.
The second half Portlaoise came out strong, threatening every time they were on the ball. With three lightning quick forwards in Regecca Cahill, Anna Mulligan and centre forward Clodagh Power Portlaoise continued to pose a threat.
Portlaoise however did not have everything their own way and were it not for some resolute defending from Emer O’Boyle , Lilly Gavin, full back Keeva O’Reilly and two exceptional saves from Abbie White it would have been a different score line.
The Portlaoise half back line was outstanding. It was the superb trio of Stefanie Abrama at centre back flanked admirably by Teagan O’Reilly and Sophie Phelan that was the platform for nearly every attack. The Portlaoise defence has a never give up attitude and work tirelessly for the team and it was their creative running that gave Portlaoise a firm grip on this contest and with some clinical finishing Roisín Murphy and Shannon Quigley found the back of the net.
This finished off what has been an extraordinary year for Portlaoise u12 girls.
