In Pictures: Presidential candidate Gavin Duffy visits Portlaoise school

As part of his tour of Portlaoise yesterday, presidential candidate Gavin Duffy visited Portlaoise College on the back of an invitation by principal Noel Daly and teacher Mr Travers.

The entrepreneur and Dragons Den star spoke to business and politics students in fifth year about his beliefs on how to be successful in business, and what changes he proposes as President.

He began by asking students Adam, Natalia and Cynthia why they wanted to study either business or politics.

While the three students had all planned very well thought-out career routes, Mr Duffy stated that he didn’t begin his business career in college, but rather by setting up a pirate radio station, which surprised quite a few of those sitting in front of him.

He also spoke about the Dragons Den – and revealed to the students how young entrepreneurs can survive the Den, ‘despite the cauldron of pressure’.  “Real success in business is about timing,” he added.

A highly astute class

The students of Portlaoise College weren’t going to let him get away from the issues, and quizzed him on what changes could be made on the housing crisis, problems in the healthcare system, lowering the voting age and even car insurance prices.

RTÉ cameras even picked up on the visit – with Midlands correspondent Ciaran Mullooly ready and waiting to quiz the Presidential nominee at the entrance of Portlaoise College on his visit to the fastest growing town in Ireland.
