It was a quieter than usual Sunday for the Laois soccer clubs with only three teams in action in the top four divisions of the CCFL.

Mountmellick Utd went down 2-0 to Birr Town at home in the Senior Division while Towerhill lost 4-0 at home to Walsh Island in Division 1. Rosenallis picked up a good win over Horsleap in Division 1.

Mountmellick 0 Birr Town 2

An under strength Mountmellick Utd went down 2-0 in the Senior League at home to Birr Town this morning.

The visitors had already beaten Mountmellick in the reverse fixture on a 4-3 scoreline last month and it was they who took control when Nicky Molloy pounced on a loose ball to tap home from close range in the first half.

Mountmellick should have equalised but Robbie Hibbitts saw his fine effort come back off the post to leave Birr 1-0 up at the break.

Town doubled their lead midway through the second period when John Corboy capitalised on shakydefending to double their lead and when Gary Donoher missed from the spot with 15 minutes left the hosts knew it just wasn’t to be their day against a Birr side that were sharper and took their chances on the day.

Rosenallis 2 Horsleap 0

The game was very even possession-wise, but Rosenallis had the majority of the clear goal chances in the game.

Jack Friel scored with a clever finish after 15 minutes after some great build up play, and a fine through-ball from Mark Dunne.

Horseleap piled on the pressure but couldn’t break down the defence. They had one good chance before the half when they hit the post from a header from a corner.

The second half was much the same, with Horseleap having a lot of possession, but couldn’t create many clear chances.

Rosenallis had a few half chances, but then finally finished the game off with 10 minutes left after another great through-ball was played behind the defence by Marcus Redmond, and Mark Dunne ran onto it and finished it off.
