Laois 1-11 Wexford 2-13
O’Byrne Cup Round 2
The Laois footballers lost their second O’Byrne Cup match on the trot as they came out the wrong end of a five point margin against Wexford.
John Sugrue’s experimental side had 12 changes from the one which lost to Meath two weeks ago and they were far more competitive here.
However, a goal in either half did the trick for Wexford who made it two wins from two matches in this competition.
There was very little between the teams throughout much of the first half.
Laois held the lead for the majority of it thanks to braces from Evan O’Carroll and Colm Murphy as well as a point from Eoin Lowry.
But Wexford were never far away and got level thanks to points from Jonathan Bealin, Niall Hughes, Paul Curtis and Barry O’Connor
While a goal three minutes from the end of the first period via Robert Frayne gave Wexford a 1-5 to 0-5 lead at half time.
Colm Murphy and Jonathan Bealin traded points on the resumption of play before a second Barry O’Connor point pushed Wexford, who had Ben Malone in the sin bin at this point, four points ahead.
But unlike the Meath defeat, Laois did not fall away and three Eoin Lowry points in a row narrowed the gap to a solitary point with 20 minutes to play.
Wexford recovered with points from Kevin O’Grady and substitute Ben Brosnan before a goal put from Niall Hughes put clear daylight between the teams again after 57 minutes.
Laois needed a goal to have any chance of a comeback and they got it after 61 minutes thanks to substitute Michael Keogh.
But the comeback from the summer would not be replicated as Wexford steadied with late points from Bealin and Brosnan to win by five in the end.
Laois will be in O’Byrne Cup action again in January when they will take on Louth away.
