Evan O’Carroll was in fine form as UCD made a winning start to the defence of their Sigerson Cup title in Belfield this afternoon.
The Crettyard man, one of four Laois lads on the panel, was the only O’Moore man to start the game and he scored a crucial goal in the second half.
UCD won the game against CIT comfortably in the end – 5-8 to 0-10 – but it was far from plane sailing.
They trailed by 0-7 to 0-1 midway through the first half but the game changed dramatically when CIT were reduced to 14 men just before half time.
Paul Walsh picked up a second yellow card just before the break and UCD exploited their man advantage to full effect in the second half.
They now enter Round 3 of the competition where they are joined by Frank Flanagan’s UL who defeated DIT last night
Elsewhere today, Garda College defeated Sligo IT by 1-15 to 1-10.
The Templemore outfit have O’Dempsey’s Shane Nerney and Courtwood’s Luke Doyle on their panel and they are also straight through to Round 3.
Nerney, who featured for Laois last year under John Sugrue, played the entire game at full-back.
