Six players from Laois enjoyed Shield glory on the 2019 Leinster team for the Lidl Post Primary Schools Interprovincials which took place yesterday in Kinnegad.
Rebecca Reddin, Erone Fitzpatrick, Emma Lawlor, Alice Dunne and Laura Mooney, who had just won another Leinster title a few weeks ago, all represented Scoil Chriost Rí, while Ballyroan’s Arianna Mezzepelle flew the flag for Heywood CS.
Former minor Laois captain and current sharpshooter for Laois Ladies Emma Lawlor was selected as Leinster captain as she proudly received the shield at the end of the game.
This was a blitz competition and Leinster began against Ulster where the sides were level at 1-1 apiece at half time.
However, a second half penalty tipped the balance in Ulster’s favour and they went on to record a 2-3 to 1-2 win.
To have a chance at reaching the Cup final, Leinster needed to defeat Connacht and they achieved that thanks to a 2-4 to 1-1 win.
That set up a winner-takes-all contest with Munster in Round 3 but unfortunately for the Leinster girls they came out the wrong side of a 3-4 to 0-5 scoreline which sent them for the Shield final.
But there would be a happy end to the day for the Laois and Leinster girls as they would go on to triumph.
Having led 0-5 to 0-2 at half time, Leinster pushed on to win 1-5 to 0-2 in the end as Lawlor raised the Shield at full time.
Well done girls!
