All of this week’s CCFL fixtures and a look back at a St Patrick’s Day win for Rosenallis

Portlaoise AFC are now just one win away from claiming the title

The CCFL season is back up and running this weekend after an almost total break last weekend for St Patrick’s Day.

Just two games took place and one of those involved a Laois team, Rosenallis, who kept their push to reach the summit of Division 1 alive.

They hosted Highfield United and had to dig deep here in order to keep their title charge on track. Trailing 1-0 at half time, they kept going right until the end and got the win which moves them within three points of league leaders Walsh Island.

Highfield actually had the better start, and within 10 minutes they were ahead. Some clever play down their right wing worked an opportunity for a great cross into the back post and the Highfield number 10 was waiting to finish from a tight angle.

The rest of the half was very even, with both teams having periods of possession, without threatening either keeper very much.

Right before the half, Rosenallis thought they were even after a free kick was directed towards goal by Adam MacDermot, only for the Highfield keeper to make a good save down to his right.

Rosenallis then upped the tempo in the second half and took over they game. Donagh Calally was a constant threat up front and Mark and Paul Dunne dominated the battles in the middle of the field.

It took until midway through the half however before Rosenallis could level the game. Highfield failed to clear their lines from a free kick and Mark Dunne took the ball down, turned and rifled the ball into the roof of the net.

Rosenallis now had their tails up, and with 10 minutes to go, a last ditch tackle from the Highfield defence forced a corner which Rosenallis converted.

Donagh Calally fired the ball into the box and Darren McEvoy was in the right place to head the ball past the onrushing keeper and into the back of the net.

Highfield created a few chances near the end, but a combination of great defending and Paul Friel making a great save right at the end, Rosenallis were able to see the game out and take the 3 points they needed.
