There was disappointment for both the ladies of Portlaoise Panthers basketball and Portlaoise rugby as they went down in their respective games today.
The Portlaoise Panthers ladies baskteball team went down to Kerry side St Mary’s of Castleisland in the Division 1 National Cup quarter-final on a scoreline of 62 to 58.
Panthers trailed 21-16 at the end of the first quarter and were 36-26 down at half time.
They rallied well in the second half before eventually losing by just four points.
Elsewhere, the Portlaoise ladies rugby team were beaten 19-10 by home side Naas in the Leinster League Division 4 final.
In a game that swung one way and then the other, Portlaoise took an early lead through a Clare O’Connell penalty but were 5-3 down at half time after Naas crossed for the game’s first try.
O’Connell went over for a try for Portlaoise early in the second half, which she converted herself to make it 10-5.
But it was to be Portlaoise’s last score as Naas added two converted tries to get their hands on the silverware.
The defeat marks a third straight final loss for Portlaoise in this grade having lost to Port Dara Falcons 12 months ago and to Wanderers the year before.
