FAI Cup progress for Crettyard, a five-star win for Stradbally and all today’s soccer results

Stradbally Town

It was another typically busy day on the local soccer scene with games taking place in the Midlands and Carlow involving Laois teams.

Crettyard United were in FAI Junior Cup last 16 action on Saturday evening where they hosted Dublin side Yellowstone from Crumlin.

Goals from Ger Murray and Aaron Morris gave Crettyard a 2-0 lead before keeper Jeff Moran saved a Glengad penalty to keep the two goal cushion.

Bobby Dowling made it 3-0 from the penalty spot and although Yellowstone did get a goal back before the end, Crettyard United held on to reach the quarter final.

Here is a run down on some of the games with full results posted below.

Towerhill 1 Clonaslee United 1 (Clonaslee win 4-2 on pens)

These two have played out some brilliant games this year and this one was no different as penalties were required to split them.

Towerhill started well and were on top for first 20 minutes. They took the lead from a Nathan Carpenter corner to the back post which Hayden Delaney headed in.

They had other good chances in first half too as Clonaslee struggled to get forward. Darlington Overseth headed straight at keeper Seamus Rosney while Hayden Delaney and Gary Roe-Smith had shots which flashed wide.

Towerhill continued to create chances in the second half with Paddy Downey, Nathan Carpenter and sub Ricky Maher all having shots from outside the box that went narrowly wide before Aidan McGovern had header cleared off the line.

It looked like Towerhill would prevail but ten minutes from the end, Clonaslee sub Padraig Hogan set up Mark Doherty who cracked a half volley to the back of the net.

The game remained level at the end of normal time and the first half of extra time passed without incident.

Clonaslee almost won it in the second period of extra time but James McRedmond’s half volley went narrowly wide.

Towerhill had the chance to progress with the last action of the game as they launched a header from a corner but Joe Joe Dunne got up to head the ball off the line.

A penalty shoot-out ensued and PJ Fitzpatrick, John Rigney and Danny Larkin all scored for Clonaslee. Keeper Seamus Rosney pulled off two saves before teenager Jack Owens converted Clonaslee’s fourth penalty to win the game.

CLONASLEE: Seamus Rosney, Niall Hogan, Mark Doherty, John Rigney, PJ Fitzpatrick, Michael Hyland, Joe Joe Dunne, Danny Larkin, Paddy Hyland, James McRedmond, Bob Downey. Subs: Padraig Hogan for P Hyland, Jack Owens for M Hyland, Paddy White for Downey

TOWERHILL: Richie Downey; Brian McCormack, James Furlong, Aidan McGovern, David Hughes, Gary Roe, Paddy Downey, Nathan Carpenter, Darlington; Martin Hillard, Hayden Delaney. Subs: Ricky Maher for Roe, Kevin Fitzpatrick for Hillard, Joey Delaney for Darlington, David Leonard for McCormack.

Stradbally Town 5 Clonown Rovers 0

Stradbally Town hosted Clonown Rovers Sunday morning in the quarter final of the CCFL Denis Delaney Division 2 Cup.

On a perfect morning for football Stradbally got off to the perfect start and were 1-0 up inside the first minute. Jimmy Langton dispossessed the Clonown left full and drove a low cross goal wards only for it to be deflected past the helpless Clonown keeper.

Stradbally continued to control the game and were shortly 2-0 up, Jody Dillon getting his first of the game. Just one minute later it was 3-0 after Benny Lawlor coolly finished a lovely through ball from Dillon. That was all the first half goals but Stradbally closed out the half comfortably.

Clonown started the second half brightly but Stradbally put the game out of reach within 10 minutes of the restart. Jody Dillon bent a beautiful free kick into the top right corner.

Dillion wasn’t to be denied his hattrick as he made it 5-0 in almost a carbon copy of his first free kick. That finished the scoring today in what was a totally dominant and overall great team performance from the Stradbally side who now eagerly await the semi final draw.

STRADBALLY TOWN: Jack Larkin, Colin Beale, Podge Fitzpatrick, Billy Murphy, Ray Mullally, Justin Lalor, Damien Murphy, Jimmy Langton, Benny Lawlor, Jody Dillon, Jack Langton. Subs: Alan Delaney, Conor Brady, Adam Murphy, Jake Byrne, John Clancy, Richie Ryan, Liam Knowles.

Ballinahown 3 Mountmellick United 2

It was a case of too many missed chances for Mountmellick as they lost 3-2 away to Ballinahown today.

Mountmellick led after five minutes with a Darren Strong header going into the back of the net from a pinpoint cross from Brandon Cooper.

Ballinahown levelled as Mountmellick conceeded a penalty to make it 1-1. The Westmeath side then made it 2-1 as a mistake in the Mountmellick defence saw another goal hit the net.

They went 3-1 up as Mountmellick missed two chances – with the ball hitting the post both times. Ballinahown led 3-1 at the interval.

A Darren Strong penalty cut the deficit to 3-2 but numerous missed chances and a man of the match display by Ballinahown keeper signalled a win for the Westmeath village. Mountmellick proved to be not clinical enough even while holding almost all of the possession in the second half.

Today was a stark lesson for the Mountmellick men as they head towards the quarter-final of the county cup.

MOUNTMELLICK UTD: Martin Forde; Brandon Cooper, John Watchorne, Eddie Melia, Robbie Conran, Eoghan O’Riordan, Darren Strong, Keith Ryan, Kieran Carroll, Robbie Hibbitts, Mark Grennan. Subs: Curtis Lee for Carroll, Daragh Hanlon for Melia, Conor Comisky for O’Riordan
