Portlaoise teenager named on Ireland U-18 women’s basketball team for European Championships

Ciara Byrne

Portlaoise Panthers basketballer Ciara Byrne has been chosen on the Ireland FIBA U18 Women’s European Championship squad.

The Scoil Chriost Ri student has made the final roster of 12 players who will compete in Division B in Skopje.

It caps a remarkable number of months for Byrne who has been involved in an incredible amount of top level sports.

The Portlaoise teenager was part of Ireland’s national U-16 basketball squad that competed in the European championships in 2018.

Ciara was also centre back on the SCR All-Ireland ‘A’ winning football team last month.

Ciara was also part of the Laois U16 football team which reached the All-Ireland ‘B’ final last year, but was unable to play in the final due to Ireland playing in the European basketball championships at the same time.

At club level, she plays for Portlaoise Panthers in basketball and Portlaoise for football and camogie. She was part of the Portlaoise setup which achieved a massive feat in winning both U16 camogie and football championship titles this year.

Speaking about the announcement, Coach O’Mahony stated: “All the squad have worked tremendously hard over the last eight months and this selection is no different than any other, as there are always hard choices to make.

“As the European Championships are a month earlier this year, we need to start our preparations right away, and all of the players know there is a lot of commitment needed in order to be at peak performance come the start of July.

“All the management staff is very eager to progress this group of players on and are very excited with the potential they all bring.”

Ireland Under 18 women will contest the FIBA U18 Women’s European Championship Division B in Skopje from July 5-14th, 2019.
