Portlaoise CBS came out the wrong end of a six goal thriller in Ferbane this afternoon as their Leinster journey ended at the final hurdle.

Granard corner forward Michael Hynes’ hat-trick proved the difference in the end with his third goal coming with almost the final kick of the game to kill off a brave CBS fightback.

The Portlaoise outfit trailed from the off but second half goals from Conor Goode and Paddy Hosey saw them close the gap to two points with four minutes to play.

However, it wasn’t to be as Granard ran out six point winners.

The Longford outfit started well as corner forward Michael Hynes rattled Conor Browne’s net in the opening ten minutes while he and centre back Ciaran Scanlan also added points.

The CBS battled back through James Connolly and Paddy Hosey and although Cormac Brady kicked another for Granard, Connoly’s fourth point levelled things up after 20 minutes.

However, Hynes got through for his second goal and that would be enough to see the North Leinster champions take a lead into the half time break.

Portlaoise CBS kept going though with a Josh Hogan-O’Brien point before Connolly took his tally to five with two more frees to leave three in it at the interval – 0-8 to 2-5.

The CBS introduced Cormac Dunne, Ben Dempsey and DJ White shortly after half time and the latter of those, along with Paddy Hosey, cut the gap on the resumption of play.

But disaster followed when Granard struck for their third goal to go eight points ahead with five minutes to play.

The CBS replied through Cormac Dunne and then when DJ White set up midfielder Conor Goode he made no mistake to smash home a brilliant goal to leave it 3-9 to 1-11.

James Connolly landed two more points but so too did the Longford men and five points separated them with six to go.

Paddy Hosey’s goal two minutes from the end gave the CBS hope but Michael Hynes completed his hat-trick on the stroke of full time to complete the win for Granard.
