Laois player edges colleague to be named GAA Hurler of the week

Willie Dunphy

What an accolade this is!

We picked out Laois hurler Willie Dunphy as our man of the match following Laois’s win over Dublin on Sunday.

And now that decision has been completely vindicated as he has been crowned the GAA’s hurler of the week.

He was up against Rosenallis’ John Lennon and Cork’s Patrick Horgan for the award but the public went for the Clough-Ballacolla man.

The Laois forward earned 12, 318 votes on the Official GAA Instagram page with colleague John Lennon second and Cork’s Patrick Horgan third.

The GAA say: “Willie Dunphy rifled over four points from play as Laois stunned Dublin at O’Moore Park.

“Dunphy’s spirit and skill were evident throughout a memorable match in Portlaoise as Eddie Brennan’s team impressed.

“Laois had several outstanding contributors against Dublin with John Lennon delivering a diligent display in a withdrawn role.

“Lennon was a prominent figure for Laois, who frustrated Dublin throughout.”

Fair play Willie!
