The Portlaoise rugby team got their season off to a good start on Sunday afternoon when they proved too strong for Athy in the Hosie Cup.

On a very warm day, Portlaoise made the short trip across to the Kildare venue and tries from Paddy Coss and Jack Reddin, as well as a conversion from Reddin, had them 12-0 up at half time.

Portlaoise added further tries in the second half from Ben Quinn and Darragh McAuley with Reddin adding a conversion and penalty to see them win comfortably.

Paddy Coss, Shane Reilly, Kevin Griffin and Harry Lalor all played well for Portlaoise up front with McAuley and Griffin pulling the strings in the backs where Ben Quinn and Cormac Doyle were very impressive.

Elsewhere, the Portlaoise 2nds also beat Athy in the Lalor Cup, 35-21 with Niall Keenan, Paudie Bourke, Sean Smith and Daniel Bland among the try scorers with Keenan adding five conversions as well.
