Portlaoise 7 Newbridge Colts 2
Ladies Soccer – KDFL Playoff Final
Portlaoise AFC ladies soccer team travelled to Athy on Sunday morning last to meet newly crowned Cup Champions Newbridge Colts in the KDFL Division 1 league playoff final.
Nothing could separate these teams throughout the year and both had finished level on points at the top of the table.
The game started at a frantic pace with both teams putting pressure on straight away eager to get off the mark.
Portlaoise looked to have the upper hand on Colts but about 10 minutes in conceded a penalty after their striker was taken down in the box. Colts made no mistake and converted with ease.
Portlaoise didn’t drop the heads though and within 5 minutes they had equalised after midfielder Mo Nerney went on a run from the centre circle and finished from close range.
Not long after Portlaoise had the lead after a great counter attack from keeper Aimee Keane which found Emma Lawlor who crossed in to Coleen Rickard, the striker finishing brilliantly to the net.
They now had momentum and kept the pressure on Colts to push for a third goal with some great passing play between Averil Westman and Caoimhe Kenna.
They were justly rewarded as not long before half time they went 3-1 up after winger Catherine Delaney ran at the Colts defence and was taken down by 2 defenders just inside the box. Mo Nerney stepped up and converted the resulting penalty.
Portlaoise came out all guns blazing in the second half and knew a big performance was needed to secure the win.
Soon after the restart captain Mo Nerney got her hat trick after a super pass from Caoimhe Kenna found her and she struck from distance to beat the Colts keeper.
Portlaoise were on the rampage now and a through ball to midfielder Emma Lawlor was calmly collected, Lawlor making no mistake and finished well from close range.
Lawlor was also involved in the 6th goal when she crossed into striker Rickard who met the ball with a great volley and into the net.
Portlaoise scored their 7th and final goal with 15 minutes to go after a wonder strike from substitute Mansfield who struck from distance and chipped the keeper.
Portlaoise; who were cheered on by a big support, ran out worthy 7 – 2 winners completely overwhelming their opponents with some very slick attacking football backed up by their rock solid defence.
Portlaoise go on the hunt for more silverware next week as they meet Clane United in the postponed KDFL Shield Final.
