Portlaoise Ladies play out entertaining draw with Three Rocks in hockey league

Portlaoise Ladies Hockey

Portlaoise 1 Three Rock Rovers 1
Leinster Hockey League Division 9

Portlaoise Ladies Hockey Club and Three Rock Rovers 3 rd proved to be very well-matched in Saturday’s league match and as a result an exciting game ensued with both teams attacking
and defending excellently throughout the game.

In the first quarter, each team started with gusto but neither managed to get a score on the board.

Then, in the second quarter, things got interesting when Portlaoise took the lead with a great goal scored by Marian O’Boyle.

The play started with a free from the side-line, taken by Kellie O’Sullivan who passed the ball to Orla Dwyer. Dwyer progressed towards the circle through the Three Rock defence and then passed the ball to April Kent.

Kent moved the ball quickly around the outside of the circle from left to right as the Three Rock defence blocked her way.

However, close to the end line she found enough space to cross the ball into the circle to perfectly positioned O’Boyle, who slipped the ball past the Three Rock goalkeeper.

Following the score, great play by Ruth Wilkinson and Una Rafter on the right- hand side of the pitch shut down a number of strong attacks by Three Rock.

In the third quarter of the game, Three Rock attacked powerfully and moved play into the Portlaoise circle. The Portlaoise defenders stayed strong and successfully defended a high
number of short corners without Three Rock scoring.

The ball moved back up the pitch to Lucy Dwyer and Yvonne Hargroves. However, soon afterwards Three Rock worked their
way back to the Portlaoise circle and subsequently scored from a short corner bringing the sides level at 1-1.

The Portlaoise team played brilliantly in the final quarter with superb defending, by Eimear O’Sullivan and Liz Poustie, and strong movement of the ball in mid-field. Portlaoise were
unlucky not to score from one of the last attacks of the game where the ball was saved by the Three Rock goalkeeper after a short corner.

The goalkeeper didn’t clear the ball and Portlaoise attackers moved the ball very close to the goal line but unfortunately couldn’t get it across the line for a goal. No additional scores were added to the score line in the final quarter and the teams finished level.
