Box by Box: How the Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick area voted in the 2020 General Election

Brian Stanley’s dominance across the Laois-Offaly constituency, and in particularly in Laois, was again evident in the Borris-in-Ossory/Municipal District when he took in over 31% of the vote, according to the tallies seen by LaoisToday.

Stanley, who got over 16,500 first preferences in total was again the clear winner in this district with more than 1,000 votes more than Sean Fleming.

Charlie Flanagan was over 200 behind Fleming though percentage wise it was his best-performing area.

The Fine Gael tallies have been seen and studied by LaoisToday and though not 100% accurate they do give a reasonable reflection of how each area voted.

Tallies from 32 of the 37 boxes were available. One box, from St Vincent’s Hospital in Mountmellick, was not opened in view of the tallymen as it had fewer than 50 votes, while boxes from Ballaghmore, Foxrock, Rushall and one of the two Rosenallis boxes were not tallied either.

Carol Nolan, the Offaly-based independent, who held on to her seat was helped by a strong showing in this area with over 600 votes according to the tallies.

Sean Fleming won six of the 32 boxes, including both in his home base of Castletown and one in nearby Mountrath (one of the three boxes) while Charlie Flanagan won seven – among them one in his home town of Mountmellick, Errill, Cullohill, Killasmeestia and one box each in Camross, Durrow and Rathdowney.

Interestingly, Charlie Flanagan won many of the boxes close to where Fine Gael have a councillor – with Conor Bergin (Killasmeestia), John King (Rathdowney and Errill) and former FG member and now independent Ollie Clooney in Durrow.

The same was evident in the Graiguecullen-Portarlington area where Aisling Moran’s local base in Killeen and Tom Mulhall’s of Emo (one box), Rath (where Portlaoise-based councillor Thomasina Connell is from) and The Heath all giving the outgoing Minister of Justice more first preferences than any other candidate.

The presence of a local councillor in Rosenallis in the guise of Seamus McDonald was also a factor where Sean Fleming got more votes than anyone else in the one box where a tally was done.

Brian Stanley won 18 of the 32 boxes that were tallied including seven of the eight boxes in Mountmellick.

Carol Nolan was the top vote getter in one of the two Clonaslee boxes, close to her home place of Cadamstown just over the Offaly border.
