This weekend is panning out a bit differently than we first thought.
Initially the Laois footballers were due to take on Kildare on Saturday night in a crucial Allianz Football League Division 2 game in MW Hire O’Moore Park before the Portlaoise venue was to host the Laois and Kilkenny hurlers on Sunday afternoon
But a call was made early in the week to switch the hurling to Nowlan Park given the expected state of the pitch after the football.
And then Storm Jorge arrived and the Laois v Kildare game was postponed to today at 1pm. It means both the county footballers and hurlers are in action at around the same time – with the hurling game in Kilkenny throwing in at 2pm.
In any case it’s a big game for the footballers – who are on five points after four games, three ahead of today’s visitors Kildare who are tied on the bottom with two points alongside Clare and Fermanagh.
A win for Laois would almost certainly ensure they couldn’t be relegated while also keeping them in touch for promotion to Division 1.
The hurlers are safe from relegation following last week’s one-point win over Carlow but have no chance of reaching the quarter-finals.
A shock win, however, over Kilkenny would jeopardize their hopes of making the knockout stages.
