Portarlington force promotion playoff as Portlaoise miss out

Portlaoise and Portarlington both won their games in the Leinster League this afternoon but Port must still beat Newbridge on Tuesday to maintain their Division 2A status

Portarlington Rugby Club will face Garda in a playoff to see if they will be promoted to Division 2B for the 2020-21 season.

Port were 26-12 winners at home to Clane today as they ran in four tries.

But league champions Roscrea weren’t to be caught at the top of the table meaning Port now play Garda, the Dublin-based club who finished second from bottom in Division 2B.

First-half tries from Anavil Storey, Kieran Hyland and Andrew Evans helped Port to a 19-12 lead at the break with Evans also adding two conversions.

And second row Aaron Ryan made sure of the win in the second half when he got their fourth try.

That promotion-relegation playoff is scheduled for Sunday, March 29. Port, who are playing in the 2nds Towns Cup this year, are due to play Kilkenny in that competition on Sunday, March 22.

PORTARLINGTON: Glen Hassett; Sean Higgins, Rory Bracken, Andrew Evans, Anavil Storey; Kieran Hyland, Paul Mannion; Aaron Maher, Fintan Murphy, Andrew Wilkinson; Darren O’Connor, Aaron Ryan; Sean Mooney, Joander Brazon, Stephen Oakley. Replacements: Stephen Mulhall, Stephen O’Donnell, Ross Doyle, James Sherlock

Elsewhere, Portlaoise were 17-7 winners away to Balbriggan in Division 2A but it wasn’t enough to overtake second-placed Coolmine.

Portlaoise were a point behind Coolmine coming into the final round and needed Edenderry to do them a favour and draw with or beat Coolmine.

But Coolmine ran in six tries for a bonus point 40-15 win in Edenderry and they will now play in the promotion/relegation playoff.

Portlaoise will once again be in Division 2A next season.

In the meantime, they are back in action next Sunday when they host Division 1 side Dundalk in Round 2 of the Towns Cup.
