Goals key as St Brigid’s get the better of St Paul’s

St Brigid’s got their 2020 championship campaign off to the perfect start as they defeated a strong St Paul’s side playing in their first senior game having won intermediate and junior in the past two seasons.

Both sides traded scores early on as Patrice Whelan got the game’s first point. Aoibhinn Maher got St. Paul’s off the mark with their first point.

Aoife Gallagher and Emma Lawlor traded scores before St Brigid’s took the early initiative as Niamh Phelan and Caoimhe Simms split the posts.

Emma Lawlor fired over two frees with a free from Whelan and Anna Moore being St Brigid’s response. St Brigid’s led by two points before they fired in a crucial goal.

Moore then got for a goal as Patrice Whelan’s rebounded shot fell into her path as she tapped into an empty net. Brigid’s then fired over three quick scores as the game began to slip away from St Paul’s. Whelan pointed a free before Saoirse Byrne and Aoife Gallagher also raised a white flags.

Lawlor got two more scores for St Paul’s before the break as St Brigid’s held a six-point lead.

Lawlor got the first score of the second-half as she pointed from play. St Brigid’s hit another purple patch as they fired in 1-2 in quick succession. Whelan pointed a free as well as a point from play.

Substitute Niamh Power scored the game’s decisive score as she powered the ball beyond Sinead O’Rourke.

Whelan pointed yet another free as the game was now beyond St. Paul’s grasp. A point from Aoife Langford and a free from Emma Lawlor were the game’s final scores as St Brigid’s ran out nine-point winners.
