Corbet comes alive late on as Clonaslee beat The Rock

Clonaslee 1-7 The Rock 0-8
Laois Shopping Centre IFC Round 2

Clonaslee came back from the dead to edge The Rock in Mountmellick this evening in Round 2 of the Laois IFC.

Niall Cortbet was the best finisher on display as he finished with an impressive 1-6.

It was a result that sees them through to the semi finals but it isn’t the end of the road for The Rock who will play either Mountmellick or the loser of Portlaoise and Crettyard in the semi final.

Corbet opened his tally with a free after a brilliant run along the sideline from sweeper Oisin Murray. Two minutres later and Murray was again the provider. Ryan Kilroe kicked a fine score as he came around on the loop from corner forward.

Niall Corbet profited from a fast ball out of defence and cut open The Rock’s defence with a diagonal pass. Kilroe turned his man but was denied a goal by Conor Allen in The Rock goals.

Corbet split the posts on the run from 50 yards after 13 minutes to extend Clonaslee’s lead. The Rocks first chance of the game was a chance on goal but Aaron Dowling’s shot smashed against the post.

Stephen McDonald raised three white flags in the 15th and 16th minute to finally get the scoreboard moving for The Rock. He turned the defender inside out with a Gooch like fake shot and solo before sending the ball over with the outside of his foot for his first. Incredibly his next two were also finished with the outside of the foot.

After the water break The Rock had new black jerseys on as to not clash with Clonaslee’s red, white and green. More importantly for The Rock, they also had momentum. Total domination of possession resulted in two points from Aaron Dowling.

Clonaslee struggled for possession for the rest of the half and considered themselves lucky to only be down three at the half.

The Rock’s tempo and ball movement continued to cause Clonaslee problems in the second half. Two scores in quick succession from Victor Oladupa and McDonald increased their advantaged.

Two Corbet frees just before the water break breathed new life into Clonaslee. They pressed up at the resumption of play and The Rock couldn’t win their own kickouts.

Sean O’Neill did win a break for The Rock though and he broke with pace. He eventually set up McDonald who put three between the sides with another great score with 10 minutes to go.

With 57 minutes on the clock Niall Corbet broke onto the ball at pace and ran at The Rocks defence. He was forced slightly wide and from the end line he smashed the ball low across the keeper into the net to level the game.

He then converted two pressurised injury time frees to clinch a two point victory for Clonaslee.
