Tributes pour in to Laois poet following passing of 97-year-old mother

Nancy Boran

Tributes have flooded in for a renowned Laois poet following the sad passing of his 97-year-old mother.

Nancy Boran, mam of poet Pat, died peacefully yesterday.

Pat posted the news of his mam’s passing on his Facebook page and hundreds of comments paying tribute to her flooded in.

Nancy attended the Presentation Convent School in Portlaoise as a teenager and worked in the office of Odlum’s Mills in the 1950s.

In 1956, she married Nicholas Boran, a native of Castlecomer. He worked in Whelan’s Hardware shop in Stradbally, and Jessop’s in Portlaoise, before the pair opened ‘Airboran Travel on Main Street in the 1960s.

That business was eventually taken over by Anthony Nolan, but the Boran family remained there before moving to The Downs in the late 1990s.

Paying tribute to his mam, Pat also thanked those who cared for her.

He said: “On behalf of my siblings and myself, I’d like to thank Director of Care Deirdre O’Callaghan and all her wonderful team of Nurses, Carers and Staff at Droimnin Nursing Home in Stradbally, Co. Laois.

“They not only cared for her so well in recent years but showed Nancy such warmth, kindness and affection, effectively becoming her surrogate family during the past eight months or so.

“We’re grateful to them beyond words.

“(I’ll try not to stay up too late tonight, ma, ‘dinging the piano’!)”

Nancy died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, in the tender care of the staff of Droimnin Nursing Home Stradbally, in her 98th year.

Beloved wife of the late Nicholas. Dearly loved mother to Margaret, Peter, Mary, Pat and Michael. Deeply regretted by her loving family, son in law Pat, daughters in law Raffaela and Anita, brother in law Fr Anthony Boran, grandchildren Kirk and April, David, Kate, Sarah, Aoife, Lee and Luca, neighbours, relatives and friends.

Given the current exceptional circumstances and to protect the welfare of everyone who knew her. A private funeral, with immediate family only, will take place at 12 noon on Friday in St. Peter and Paul’s Church, Portlaoise and will be streamed on the webcam http://www.portlaoiseparish.ie/web-cam/. Burial will follow in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery, Portlaoise.

May Nancy Rest in Peace.
