Crime: Stolen motorbike, tools and learner driver doing 170km/h on motorway

Laois-Offaly Gardai have been busy in recent days dealing with burglaries in Clonaslee, Rosenallis and conducting speed checks as part of National Slow Down Day.

Mountmellick Gardaí are investigating a burglary that occurred on Thursday night in the Rosenallis area during the course of which a rare vintage 1950s Royal Enfield Clipper motorcycle was stolen.

Portlaoise Detective Unit are investigating a burglary that occurred on Wednesday night into Thursday morning last between 10.30pm and 11am when a large quantity of power tools and stock – including Oleo Mac chainsaws, powersaws and hedgeclippers as well as batteries – were stolen.

“If you are offered items like these or see them for sale please let us know,” posted Laois-Offaly Gardai on Facebook.

“If you saw anything suspicious in and around the Shraduff area of Clonaslee or in Clonaslee between those times or passed through the location and have dashcam footage please let our colleagues know.

“A crime like this has the potential to close a business in ordinary times but in Covid times can be decimating.”

Meanwhile, Laois Roads Policing Unit conducting a speed check on the M7 on Friday evening detected a vehicle travelling at 170km/ph in heavy traffic and wet weather conditions.

The vehicle was stopped and the driver was discovered to be a Learner Permit holder who was driving unaccompanied.

Driver arrested and charged with Dangerous Driving and the vehicle was seized under the Clancy Amendment.
