Sarah Crowley’s first half goal proved crucial for Kilkenny as they inflicted a six point defeat on Laois in Callan this afternoon.

It was nip and tuck between the two teams until Crowley struck four minutes before half time.

John Desmond’s side kept battling throughout but could never get closer than with three points of Kilkenny in the end.

In order to reach the league quarter final, Laois must defeat Wexford next weekend.

Wexford defeated Kilkenny by seven points last weekend so Laois will need to win by at least six points in order to progress to the next phase.

If not, they will face a relegation playoff against another of the bottom placed sides in the other groups.

Laois began this one well with a free from Aimee Collier but that would prove to be the only time that they held the lead in the entire game.

Kilkenny forward Eva Hynes reeled off three points to give the home side the advantage after ten minutes.

Clodagh Tynan levelled things up at the water break but that would also be the final time that there was parity in the game.

Sarah Crowley and Therese Donnelly regained the lead for Kilkenny before the former raised that all important green flag.

In fairness to Laois, they responded well to the goal with Jessie Quinlan and Collier splitting the posts to leave it 1-5 to 0-5 at half time.

Collier and Aoife Prendergast traded points on the resumption of play but Kilkenny got on top after that with Aisling Curtis, Eva Hynes and Laura Greene all pointing.

Aimee Collier responded after the water break but Kilkenny made the game safe right at the end through Ciara Phelan.
