Moment in Time: Some great photos from Laois primary schools art event in 2005

Students from a number of primary schools around Laois were front and centre in the Dunamaise Arts Centre at an event organised by Laois County Council back in early 2005.

The Arts and Architects in Schools project displayed a number of creations from Scoil Tieghearnach Cullohill, Rathdowney Church of Ireland NS, Killadooley NS, St Patrick’s BNS Mountmellick, Cosby NS Stradbally and Derrylamogue NS.

From painstakingly assembled mosaic pieces, to delicate pottery, sculpture and scale model constructions, a plethora of crafts were exhibited on the day, along with an attractively designed booklet, detailing information about the individual projects.

Addressing a large attendance of teachers, parents, primary school children, Laois County Council and public representatives Assistant Arts Officer Bridie Keenan welcomed new County Manager Peter Carey to his first official function, before expressing her delight at the success and level of enjoyment experienced by the participants.

She added: “We’re lucky to have such support for the arts in Laois and the pieces are a tribute to the students and artists/architects involved.

“Being creative is always fun and 1 want to thank all of the children for their fantastic work.”

After the speeches, the attendance was treated to a dance routine by pupils from Cullohill National School, with the help of dance tutor Marie Cashin.

Organised by the Arts Office of Laois County Council with the aim of developing appreciation for the arts amongst young students, the Artists and Architects in Schools programme involved the help of a number of local artists and architects, who visited participating schools to devise projects.

Alf Harvey was on hand to capture a selection of great photos which you can check out below.
