A total of 207 Ukrainian children are in school in Laois according to figures released by the Department of Education today.

The figures are accurate to January 31 and show that there are 125 children in Laois primary schools with a further 82 in secondary schools.

Across the country there are 14,482 Ukrainian pupils enrolled in primary and secondary schools, with the current data indicating an enrolment rate of 92% among Ukrainian children aged 5-18.

Looking at neighbouring counties, there are 185 Ukrainian students in Carlow schools, 243 in Kildare, 268 in Kilkenny, 143 in Offaly and 302 in Tipperary.

Dublin schools have accommodated the most with 1,885 while there are over 1,500 in Cork and over 1,400 in Kerry.

In all, 9,334 children have been accommodated in primary schools with 5,148 enrolled in secondary schools.

The Laois figure is one of the lower ones in the country, ahead of just Carlow, Longford, Monaghan, Offaly and Roscommon.

“To assist with the transition of Ukrainian students and their families into Irish schools Regional Education and Language Teams (REALT) continue to operate, hosted by the 16 regional education and training boards around Ireland and staffed by regionally-based education support personnel,” said an update from the Department of Education.

“These teams are ensuring that clear, accessible information flows are in place between schools, local education support services and national support structures in relation to people arriving from Ukraine.

“Information for parents in Ukrainian and Russian on accessing school places is available on gov.ie/Ukraine.”
