International success for Laois athletes at World Masters and British And Irish Junior Mountain Running Championship

Ballyroan’s Martin McDonald enjoyed victory at the World Masters Mountain Running Championships in Madeira last week.

McDonald retained his World Title in the over 65 age category of the World Masters Mountain Running Championships for another year.

Martin took the lead with a little over 3km to go and finished 1st with a comfortable gap of 27 seconds over Peter Flunger of Austria and Roberto Longhi of Italy (last year’s second place) in 3rd.

This is a massive achievement for the Ballyroan Abbeyleix & District Athletic Club founder, not only winning a world gold but doing it two years in a row, retaining his own title from last year’s championships in Clonmel.

Martin was accompanied by Gerard Down and Jim Saint John to take a Bronze team medal for Ireland and round off a great day’s racing.

This is the 2nd International success this month for Ballyroan Abbeyleix & District AC

With Jack McMahon winning a bronze medal while representing Ireland at the British And Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships in Peebles, Scotland in the U20 category.

The club is immensely proud of Martin and Jack’s achievements and is always open to new members wishing to join in our successes.
