Young Laois man killed following ‘hit and run’ incident in Limerick

A young Laois man has died following a ‘hit and run’ incident in Limerick on Friday evening.

Joe Drennan, of Knocknagad, Mountrath, was killed following a fatal road collision in Castletroy.

The 21-year-old was a talented journalism student in University of Limerick where he was in Fourth Year.

Joe is survived by his mother Marguerite, father Tim, brothers Richard, Ciaran and John and sisters Ava, Marie and Sarah.

Just over a week ago, Joe had been appointed as the editor-in-chief of the prestigious Limerick Voice student newspaper.

He was shortlisted earlier this year for Journalist of the Year at the annual Student Media Awards for the work he produced as part of his work placement with Gay Community News.

According to Live95FM, Joe was pronounced dead at University Hosptial Limerick on Friday night following the collision which happened around 9.50pm on Limerick’s Dublin Road.

It’s believed that Joe was waiting at a bus stop on the Dublin Road when he was hit by one of two cars involved in a collision.

According to Gardai, one of the cars involved in the incident failed to stop.

They say: “The driver of one car failed to remain at the scene.

“The male pedestrian was removed to University Hospital Limerick where he was later pronounced deceased.

“The male driver (40’s) and the female adult passenger of the second car were removed to University hospital Limerick, for treatment for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at the time.

“The scene of the collision is currently preserved while Garda Forensic Collision Investigators conduct a technical examination.

“Dublin Road from the junction of the Groody Roundabout through to the junction of the Golf Links Road, is closed. Local diversions are in place.

“Gardaí in Limerick are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

“Any road users who were travelling in the area of Dublin Road, Castletroy, Limerick on Friday 13th October, between 9pm and 10pm, and who may have camera footage (including dash-cam), are asked to make this available to Gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Henry Street Garda Station on 061 212 400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.”
