Local Councillor demands safety measures be taken “sooner rather than later”

Calls for a pedestrian crossing in Portlaoise
Road safety measures and flashing lights have been sought

A Laois County Councillor has outlined several key improvements he wishes to see “sooner rather than later.”

Independent Cllr Ollie Clooney was speaking at the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District November meeting, where matters of road safety were to the fore.

Cllr Clooney first urged Laois County Council to put a ramp on the road at the Stores Daybreak, Durrow and consider the possibility of reversing the flow of traffic on this one way street.

Mr. Edmond Kenny, District Engineer said: “The provision of a ramp at Daybreak can and will be accommodated.

“The decision to reverse the direction of flow for those using the one-way system will be considered following a period of monitoring traffic movements around the Green.”

Cllr Clooney then turned his attention to Cullohill, asking the Council to carry out on inspection on the bridge at Cannonswood.

Mr. Kenny said the bridge will be cleared of vegetation for further inspection, with updates to follow.

Cllr Clooney’s final motion was for the Council to  extend the footpath on the Clough Road, in Ballacolla.

Mr Kenny responded again, saying:

“Laois County Council will liaise with the National Transport Authority with regard to the provision of footpath facilities on this side of the Village.”

It has been a good week for Cllr Clooney, who was given strong indications at last week’s Budget 2024 meeting that his long-sought-after carpark in Durrow may be on the way.
