It will be lights, camera, action as Mountmellick Macra returns to the stage once again with another side splitting comedy.

The club has a long tradition with drama and over the last 50 years many plays and people from around the country have graced the stage.

“Mammy’s Boy” by Jimmy Keary is a 3 act comedy. Hughie McGarry is the apple of his mother Maisie’s eye.

He returns after a two-year absence with plenty of debts, a dog-grooming girlfriend in tow and his sights set on the family home.

But Hughie’s sister Betty and Maisie’s friend Joe see through him and try to spoil his schemes.

Mountmellick Macra down through the years has put on many variety shows as well as partaking in many drama competitions.

Annually it puts on a panto in February and in February 2024, audiences have Cinderella to look forward to.

Just this past year the club enjoyed success nationally with Aoife Fitzpatrick and her cast coming runners up in the Macra National Drama competition with ’22 Hardcastle Court’.

In recent years the club has put on two other Jimmy Keary plays Fortunes and Misfortunes and For Better For Worse.

These comedies have gone down very well with audiences and Mammys Boy promises to be no different.

The play will take place on Thursday, November 23, Saturday November 25 and Sunday, November 26 at 8.15pm in Mountmellick Macra hall.

Tickets are €15 and can be purchased on the door.
